I Can See the Music!

Hold onto that VCR, because it just became an integral part of your soundsystem. VHS HiFi machines make as good if not better audio recordings of a simple left-right channel source than computers, tape decks, DAT recorders and anything else you can think of. The advantages are numerous:

1) 6-hours non-stop recording with no decrease in quality;

2) Little investment – machines are easy to find (sometimes for free) and new tapes are as cheap as $1;

3) Easy set up – it’s basically plug-n-play (RCA to RCA), and

4) Fewer risks of technical glitches than most other machines. And if it falls on the floor, who cares?

The only drawback is that you have to play the tape in real-time to your computer to create a sound file to edit. But this is only if you want to edit – if no editing is required, your recording is immediately ready for playback. Just like a tape deck.

This is especially nifty for DJs and people who want to transfer their vinyl collections. With six hours of high-quality available space, you can compile a veritable library of music and/or audio content that sounds as good – if not better – than mp3’s and CDs.

Check Wikipedia for all the technical specs.
