I Pee Freely: The Best Public (and not-so-Public) Toilets in Montreal – Part I

On a recent trip to Toronto, I picked up a copy of Now and came across an interesting feature on the dearth of public toilets in metropolitan Hogtown. It got me thinking: could Toronto possibly suck any harder? Personally, I think the writer just wasn’t trying. I mean, of course Starbucks is going to keep the john under lock and key – and who the fuck thinks they’re entitled to take a leak at Zellers? Is it from all the anti-freeze you’re drinking?

I therefore offer my own guide to the best free lavatories throughout Montreal. This will be an ongoing feature as I can’t possibly list them all at once, nor am I aware of every single secret alcove of relief. So please, if you have suggestions, email them to me at thepantyraid@gmail.com, with a photo if possible.

Concordia University

Pretty much any building on the downtown campus is a safe bet, though I tend to favour the ground floor facilities of the Hall Building. So long as you look vaguely like a student, no one will give you any trouble. The quality is nothing to write home about, but with security just a stone’s throw away, peace-of-mind is worth the communist-era amenities.

Westmount Square (1 Westmount Square, Atwater Metro)

I’ve never used the bathroom here personally, but one can only imagine that the public restrooms in the city’s snootiest underground mall offer silken toilet paper and sink fixtures trimmed in gold and endangered tortoise shell. I’ll look into it next week and report back.

More to come!
